And a few more things …
Huawei. Wow! I noted last week that the iPhone 11 exemplifies how, now more than ever, the competitive differentiator for smartphones is the camera. Just check out the newly announced Mate 30 Pro: 4 Leica-branded cameras on the rear of the device: a 40MP super-wide-angle camera, a 40 MP wide-angle image-stabilized camera, an 8MP image-stabilized 3x telephoto camera, topped off by a time-of-flight (ToF) depth sensor (a rear depth sensor noticeably missing in the iPhone 11). Oh yeah, and a 32-MP camera in front. And, like Apple, Huawai uses a souped-up chip developed in-house, the Kirin 990, to boost its computational photography wizardry.
(BTW, Mike Chang, former Head of North America Technology Planning & Partnerships at Huawei, is one of our Visual 1st Show & Tell Judges this year)
Huawei and Profoto. I mentioned Profoto’s announcement of its innovative handheld flash for iPhone, the C1 and C1 Plus in last week’s Visual 1st Perspectives. Profoto is going beyond the iPhone, as VP Product Management Erik Erik Bjernulf will also discuss at Visual 1st. Profoto announces a partnership with Huawei, through which the Profoto brand and parts of its unique technology and design (10+3 patents pending) will be incorporated in the Huawei Mate 30 Series camera.
Generated Photos. Wow again! There is no end in sight to AI disrupting the imaging industry. A startup called Generated Photos offers 100,000 AI-generated headshots for free and puts stock photo companies on notice. Update: Generated Photos founder Ivan Braun will attend Visual 1st, and participate in one of our Show & Tell sessions.
Perfect Corp. Perfect Corp., panelists at a previous Visual 1st, have announced a strategic partnership with the Alibaba Group. Perfect Corp. will integrate its YouCam Makeup AR virtual try-on technology into Alibaba’s Taobao and Tmall online shopping experience. Reportedly, the partnership includes Alibaba making an investment in Perfect Corp.
Facebook. If it hadn’t been offered by privacy/security-challenged Facebook – but say by Apple for instance instead (alas their innovation appears to be limited to their existing product lines) Facebook’s innovative 2-way video hardware solutions could have been a great success. The newest addition to their Portal lineup: Portal TV, a video chat set-top box camera that lets you make video calls with the TV as your screen, join Watch Parties (PIP-like screens that show your friends responding and commenting to what you both watch at the same time), and have the camera follow you when you move around. And yes – it comes with a hardware slider to cover the camera.
Best,
Hans Hartman
